Sandra 'Puma' Jones

Sandra 'Puma' Jones. Born in the United States, on October 5, 1953. Jones earned her master's degree in social work from prestigious Columbia University. She then traveled to Jamaica to work in her field in underprivileged aread of Kingston. While there, Jones was overhead singing in her apartment by a group of aspiring reggae musicians who asked her to join with them to form a group.The group that formed was Black Uhuru. Jones assumed the name Puma and began working as a backup singer for band. With Puma Jones in their ranks, Black Uhuru went on to be the first reggae band to win Grammy Award. By 1986, Jones's health had begun to fail and she left the band. On January 28, 1990, she died from cancer.
